What should drive the choice?
The 5P fits a constrained-depth rack with a sufficient 1,100W budget. The 5PX fits a higher-watt or explicitly expandable-runtime plan, provided the full installation has room and support.

These two Eaton models solve different constraints
The 5P1500RC is useful to a buyer whose first problem is a short cabinet. The 5PX1500RTG2 is useful when real-power capacity or external battery growth is the stronger requirement. Choosing between them by the shared 1500 class discards the differences that matter. Treat the comparison as a choice of installed configuration: rack envelope, supported load, direct connections, management and the battery system that will actually be purchased.
Both are line-interactive 120V UPS models in the cited US records. We have not tested either unit. Manufacturer specifications support the numerical distinctions below, while the installation scenarios are our own planning examples. They do not establish a runtime, acoustic or reliability winner. If continuous online double conversion is mandatory, use that as an earlier exclusion rather than expecting the higher series number to change the topology.
The 340W gap can matter more than the family label
Eaton specifies 1,440VA and 1,100W for the 5P1500RC, compared with 1,440VA and 1,440W for the 5PX1500RTG2. The watt difference is 340W, while the cited VA ceiling is the same. A load can pass one limit and fail another. Obtain both values for the planned equipment and preserve any accepted growth or failover case. Avoid replacing the actual requirement with the sum of power-supply maximum nameplates unless that is the deliberately accepted planning basis.
For an illustrative 1,200W demand, the 5P is outside its watt rating and the 5PX can remain under consideration if its VA, source and runtime checks pass. At an illustrative 800W demand, both can remain candidates. The larger model may offer valuable flexibility, but its extra watt capacity is not a measured duration benefit. A battery-backed application needs enough time as well as enough conversion capacity. Keep those two selection questions on separate lines in the quote review.
| Requirement | 5P1500RC | 5PX1500RTG2 |
|---|---|---|
| Rated output | 1,440VA / 1,100W | 1,440VA / 1,440W |
| Body depth | 16 inches | 17.6 inches |
| Direct 5-15R outputs | Ten | Eight |
| External battery path | None documented for this exact model | Up to four matching 5PXEBM48RTG2 modules |
A shorter body is useful only inside a measured installation
The 1.6-inch chassis-depth difference can be significant in a compact cabinet, but it is not the complete clearance calculation. Measure front and rear rail spacing, plug projection, cable turning space, rear-door closure and access needed for maintenance. A rack’s advertised outer depth is not the same dimension as its usable equipment depth. Preserve the actual measurements with the planned mounting orientation so the person receiving the hardware can verify the same arrangement.
Also compare the required supports and the included package. Neither a 2U front panel nor a rack photograph proves that the hardware in a particular listing fits your post spacing. If the installation includes battery modules, their mounting and handling requirements become part of the same review. A cabinet that just accommodates a short UPS might not be appropriate for an expanded system, even when the base chassis itself fits. Do not let an early fit check for one component stand in for the complete bill of materials.
Buy battery expansion against a service timeline
The 5P1500RC is not the model to choose on an assumption of later external battery growth. Eaton explicitly lists no extended battery capability for it and points toward the 5PX G2 family for that requirement. For the cited 5PX, the external module has the exact identifier 5PXEBM48RTG2. A matching voltage description by itself does not establish compatibility with another pack or an older generation.
Write the required bridge or shutdown duration first. Then compare the manufacturer reference at the same watt load for the exact battery configurations being quoted. A larger bank adds rack positions, weight, service access, replacement parts and battery-management responsibility. It can be justified for a clear requirement, but buying the maximum number without a timeline turns a useful option into an unexamined ownership commitment. We make no claim that the two base systems last a particular number of minutes at a common load without the corresponding source curves.
The smaller-capacity unit has more direct connections
The 5P provides ten 5-15R outputs, while the 5PX provides eight. A buyer can therefore gain watt capacity and lose two direct receptacles by moving to the 5PX. Count every equipment supply cord, including any management network components that must remain powered. Reserve future connections only where the load plan also reserves appropriate capacity. An empty socket is not evidence of spare watts, and a spare watt budget is not an available socket.
If a separate PDU is part of the approved design, assess the combined connection map and downstream limits. A managed PDU may be needed even when direct outputs are plentiful because outlet control is a separate operational requirement. In that case, the UPS outlet difference may not drive the choice. If the rack can avoid another distribution component by using the ten direct outputs, include the saved installation work in the decision, while retaining the manufacturer’s requirements for the actual loads and source.
A common logo does not make management configuration identical
Both product records describe optional networking rather than promising that every base package includes the required card. On the 5PX, Eaton explicitly identifies the optional Network-M3. Verify exact compatibility for the 5P and the delivered card revision before transferring an existing management standard to the new unit. Also verify software support for the hosts being protected. A UPS network address is only one dependency in a graceful-shutdown system.
For a multi-rack purchase, standardizing a supported card, firmware process and documented shutdown integration can simplify operations. It can also create an expensive mismatch if a shallow site is forced to accept a chassis or battery layout it cannot accommodate. Keep a small set of approved configurations with named exceptions instead of treating one model as universal. Obtain current support and registration terms from the seller and manufacturer; this comparison does not infer longer life from the branding shared by the two products.
Choose the bottleneck you actually need to remove
Prefer the 5P1500RC when a measured shallow-rack constraint matters and the 1,100W ceiling, ten outputs and fixed battery configuration meet the service requirement. Prefer the 5PX1500RTG2 when the higher real-power ceiling or an approved expansion plan is necessary and the complete cabinet arrangement supports it. If the desired future load exceeds both models, broaden the shortlist rather than paying for the larger unit and retaining the same unresolved constraint.
Ask for separate line items for the base UPS, batteries, supports, card, software and any service package. Compare that complete configuration against the accepted requirement. Check the full model and bundle in an Amazon search result rather than assuming the first similar listing is equivalent. The defensible purchase is the exact supported system that fits the current site and the named future scenario, with the tradeoffs recorded for whoever maintains it next.
