What should drive the choice?
Shortlist PDU41001 when individual power commands are necessary and the management path can be maintained. Confirm the supplied revision and plug orientation before ordering.

A recovery tool for an unattended rack
The CyberPower PDU41001 makes sense when a technician needs to control a particular rack device's power without visiting the site. Its eight front receptacles can be switched individually or collectively through the supported management interface. That can support a deliberate reboot of a locked appliance, an approved startup sequence or disabling an unused connection. The buying case is strongest when the required action is already defined and the outlet can be identified confidently.
Do not begin with a general desire for a smart strip and decide what it should control afterward. Power commands have different consequences for a router, a storage system and an application server. This review examines CyberPower's documentation and the operating choices around the product. We have not logged into a unit, executed an outlet command, measured response time or tested its behavior during a network failure.
Check the complete electrical specification
The official model page lists 120V nominal input, NEMA 5-15P input, eight NEMA 5-15R outlets, a 12ft cord and a 1U format. It distinguishes 15A maximum current from 12A derated input. The output range is 100 to 120VAC. All eight connections share the unit's supply, so individual switching does not create eight independent electrical capacities.
| Buying question | PDU41001 documentation | Why it affects the order |
|---|---|---|
| Required action | Individual and collective outlet switching | Useful for a defined recovery process |
| Outlet count | Eight, all at the front | Count each equipment supply and check orientation |
| Input current | 15A maximum; 12A derated | Use the applicable limit in the aggregate load plan |
| Source connection | NEMA 5-15P; 12ft attached cord | Measure the source route |
| Management | Ethernet and local controls | Plan access and operational ownership |
| Input-plug orientation | Product page and datasheet differ | Confirm the supplied revision and actual plug |
A switched unit is still subject to its source and installation limits. Decide which loads may operate together and what happens after an outage when several devices restart. Scheduling can change the order of operations, but it cannot make an oversized permanent load fit the circuit. Record expected operating demand and meaningful peak conditions independently of socket count. If a specific electrical decision requires design work, resolve it before making the PDU an installed dependency.
Resolve the input-plug detail before buying
There is a specific documentation discrepancy worth checking. The current product page describes a right-angle plug with a 45-degree offset, while the manufacturer datasheet labels the plug style straight. Both identify NEMA 5-15P. The difference can matter beside an adjacent receptacle, behind a door or in a tight UPS output area. Request confirmation and a photograph of the actual supplied item if orientation is important to the installation.
Do not assume a related PDU41001G or another model in the series is identical because its outlet count looks familiar. Use the complete part number and hardware revision in the quotation. A seller photo may be illustrative rather than a picture of the delivered stock. Resolving this before order is more useful than discovering that the attached cord cannot leave the source in the intended direction after mounting the strip.
Define each permitted power action
Create an outlet map that names the equipment and the specific power supply served. A label such as switch two is insufficient when a rack has several similar devices or a dual-supply chassis. The person issuing a command should be able to match the interface entry with a physical label and an approved procedure. Record whether a device may be restarted immediately or requires application shutdown and authorization first.
For equipment with two supplies, switching one cord may leave the chassis running. Switching both cords can remove the resilience the design was meant to provide. Write the intended recovery sequence for that equipment rather than assuming an outlet reboot means a device reboot. Also decide how an interrupted operation will be investigated. The PDU reports and executes supported actions; it does not know whether the application has completed its work safely.
Keep the management route available
Map the network path between the administrator and the PDU. Include the access switch, firewall, router and any external connection the action depends on. If the device being restarted carries that path, its shutdown can remove the very connection needed to observe recovery. Check the supported command behavior and plan a maintenance validation for the actual configuration. Do not presume that a remote button provides an independent communications route.
Startup sequencing is similarly dependent on the surrounding equipment. A router may need one service before another appliance can contact its controller. Write down the dependency and validate the sequence after an approved outage exercise. A fixed delay copied from another site is not evidence that all devices are ready. The useful outcome is a reachable, working service, not simply a list of outlets marked on.
Own the management endpoint
CyberPower documents network monitoring, event notifications and upgradeable firmware. The list of supported protocols is a capability inventory, not a recommended configuration. Verify the installed firmware, current release information and required integration before deployment. Enable the services the site needs and apply the organization's access policy. Keep administrative ownership and configuration records with the other managed rack equipment.
Choose alert recipients and response procedures deliberately. An email address entered during commissioning can become stale when a technician leaves. Time synchronization and clear device names help incident records remain interpretable. Test a harmless notification where supported and record the result. None of these steps constitutes a security audit, and this review does not claim that we have evaluated the firmware's implementation or the suitability of a particular authentication integration.
Switching and per-outlet measurement are separate
The series manual lists PDU41001 in the switched family, separately from switched metered-by-outlet products. Do not infer device-level energy accounting merely because each receptacle can be controlled. If a project requires per-server kilowatt-hours, chargeback or a particular measurement accuracy, obtain explicit support for those requirements from the exact model documentation before buying.
Also keep power distribution separate from backup and transfer functions. This model is described with a single input. A series heading in a document is not evidence of two independent sources or automatic transfer behavior for this unit. If the rack needs transfer between feeds, specify that function and its input arrangement explicitly. A switched PDU and an automatic transfer switch solve different operational requirements.
Allow service space around the controlled outlets
The manual's height, width and depth specification gives an approximately 1.75 by 17.05 by 4.41in chassis. Add the connected plugs, their bend radius, retention parts and network cabling when checking clearance. A closed cabinet should preserve access to the identifying labels and local controls. The presence of front outlets can suit some layouts and complicate others, depending on which side the equipment's inlets face.
The product page advertises a three-year limited warranty. Confirm the applicable terms, exact package contents and condition of the stock. For used hardware, include a controlled reset, firmware review and configuration acceptance in the work plan. A powered-on display does not prove clean management settings or that the seller has verified every switched receptacle.
When another PDU is a better match
If the site needs remote load visibility while all receptacles remain unswitched, consider the Eaton PDUMNH15. If a technician only needs a local amperage reading, the PDU15M2F12R is a different functional category. Compare the operating requirement before evaluating brand preference or an advertised feature count.
Verdict
PDU41001 belongs on a shortlist for supported remote outlet control in a compatible rack. Its value depends on clear outlet identity, a reachable management route and maintained configuration. Verify the exact input-plug orientation, current limit and hardware supplied, then validate the intended recovery action. Choose it because that workflow is necessary, with the surrounding dependencies understood.
