What should drive the choice?
Shortlist PSI5-1500RT120 when its voltage-specific VA and watt limits fit, the approximately 20-inch chassis fits the rack, and the selected battery configuration meets the outage task.
Research based on linked manufacturer documentation. We have not physically tested this equipment.
An expandable line-interactive UPS with a rating detail to preserve
The Vertiv Liebert PSI5-1500RT120 is a useful candidate when a rack needs more battery configuration flexibility than a fixed internal-battery purchase provides. It combines a 1,350 W output limit with documented external cabinets and rack/tower installation. The first procurement detail to settle is less obvious: the manufacturer's broad 1,500 VA headline differs from the manual's capacity at a 120 V input.
This review uses manufacturer documentation for the complete PSI5-1500RT120 model. It does not cover the lithium-ion variant, an N management-card bundle or a TAA package. We have not tested runtime, acoustic behavior or transfer performance. The recommendation is based on supported configuration, physical fit and a shutdown procedure the installation team can verify.
At 120 V, use the manual's 1,440 VA figure
The exact-model product overview says 1,500 VA / 1,350 W. The PSI5 installer/user guide breaks capacity out by input voltage: 1,440 VA / 1,350 W at 120 V and 1,500 VA / 1,350 W at 125 V. Use the applicable voltage-specific pair in the purchasing worksheet rather than repeating the headline without its condition.
The distinction matters to a load that approaches the apparent-power boundary. An illustrative 1,200 W, 1,460 VA load exceeds the stated 120 V VA figure even though its watts are below 1,350. A 1,000 W, 1,250 VA load fits both limits on paper. These are sizing examples, not equipment tests or recommended margins. Other voltage settings need their own manual check because the table includes further capacity changes.
Measure the rack through meaningful operating states, including storage activity, backups and loss of another source. For equipment sharing two supplies, determine what this UPS must carry after the other path fails. Write the intended failure requirement beside the measured numbers. A normal shared-load reading cannot establish suitability for a different operating state that the installation is expected to survive.
The exact connection and topology package
Vertiv identifies a line-interactive design with automatic voltage regulation and sine-wave battery output. Its product specification lists a NEMA 5-15P input and six NEMA 5-15R receptacles. The model outline drawing identifies three always-on outlets and a three-outlet programmable group. This is a group-control arrangement, so do not specify independent control of every receptacle from the outlet count alone.
Assign the network, storage and compute devices deliberately. If some equipment can stop early, use the manual to establish the supported group policy and its configuration. Keep any switch carrying shutdown commands powered until those commands finish. A useful outlet schedule records each cord, the device it serves and when that device can safely lose support.
The supply still needs to meet the manufacturer's installation requirements. Have the responsible facility professional confirm the circuit and intended connection, and check the cord route after the rear door closes. A familiar 5-15 plug simplifies identification, but it is not a complete electrical design. Likewise, six outputs share one UPS budget and do not create independent A/B power sources.
Separate the internal kit from the external cabinet
Vertiv's external battery compatibility table explicitly pairs PSI5-48VBATT with PSI5-1500RT120. Its datasheet separately lists PSI5-1500BATKIT as the internal replacement battery kit. Those part numbers solve different tasks. An order for an external cabinet should not be confused with replacement of the batteries already inside the chassis.
Choose external capacity from a documented duration at measured watts. Establish whether the goal is application shutdown, a short interruption bridge or continued operation for a specific period. Use the manufacturer's exact configuration data to select cabinets. Do not multiply internal-battery minutes by cabinet count or assume another nominally 48 V enclosure is a supported substitute.
Write the complete installed battery arrangement into the quote. Include enclosure locations, support hardware, compatible cables and service access. The base UPS occupying 2U does not describe the entire expanded system. Also include every cabinet in the future battery inventory, with its own replacement requirements and commissioning record. That makes the runtime configuration maintainable by someone who did not place the original order.
Manufacturer minutes should answer an operational question
The manual's runtime table gives internal-battery references of 6.3 minutes at 1,350 W and 18.1 minutes at 675 W. Treat those as manufacturer planning data for the documented conditions, not independent measurements or a guarantee for an aging unit. Use watts to select the runtime row while separately preserving the voltage-specific capacity limits in the sizing decision.
Time the real shutdown workflow during approved commissioning. Include outage detection, any chosen delay, application stops, storage completion and host shutdown. Identify the network dependencies and the point at which the programmable group can turn off. A published battery interval becomes useful only when it is compared with the sequence the protected equipment must finish.
Plan recovery as well as the first interruption. Establish who checks battery status, how equipment restarts and what happens if another event arrives before recovery. An expanded battery system still needs a reserve and shutdown policy. More nominal minutes should not leave the organization without a defined point at which workloads are stopped safely.
Check the base model against the N package
The product description offers USB management and an optional IntelliSlot RDU120 network card. The datasheet distinguishes the standard PSI5-1500RT120 from PSI5-1500RT120N with its network-card package. Keep the complete suffix on every quotation. A photograph showing an installed card does not prove that the base model being sold includes one.
For a local host, confirm current Power Assist support and the correct USB arrangement. For multiple hosts or virtualized workloads, specify the supported Power Insight and network-management configuration. Map how every shutdown command reaches its destination. Also establish alert ownership and access during loss of internet service, rather than treating successful dashboard access as proof of complete outage readiness.
Check depth before deciding that 2U is available
The exact-model page lists approximately 20.1 inches, or 511 mm, of depth. Some manufacturer documents round dimensions differently, so use the current delivered-revision drawing for final fit. A shallow cabinet with an empty 2U opening still needs room for the chassis, rear connections, cord bends and the manufacturer's ventilation clearance. External dimensions of the cabinet do not establish that usable space.
Confirm rails, brackets, tower supports and battery cables with the actual supplier. Used or open-box packages need a delivered-parts list and battery history. Plan safe handling and access for the approved battery procedure before neighboring cables make that work difficult. User-replaceable or hot-swappable descriptions still require following the manual and site change controls.
PSI5-1500RT120 is worth shortlisting when its voltage-specific limits, deeper chassis and documented battery expansion fit the project. Compare the APC SMX1500RM2UC for another expandable line-interactive architecture, or the GXT5-1500LVRT2UXL when online double conversion is required. The final order should identify the complete battery and management arrangement and a measurable acceptance task.
