What should drive the choice?
Choose switched outlets when a defined recovery workflow needs them. Choose monitored power when visibility is the requirement and power control adds avoidable operational complexity.

The extra capability is control, not just more data
A monitored PDU exposes power information remotely; a switched PDU adds control over specified outlets or outlet groups. Eaton’s terminology describes switched units as adding individual outlet control to monitored features. Exact models still differ, so verify the granularity before ordering. A product with one remotely controlled bank is not equivalent to a product with individually controlled receptacles. Eaton’s rack PDU feature definitions are a useful starting point.
The decision is practical: do you need to turn something off and back on without sending a person to the rack? If the answer is yes, describe which device, who initiates the action and what must remain available for the action to finish. If the answer is only that power usage should be visible, a monitored unit may meet the requirement with fewer control decisions.
Remote power cycling is a recovery tool with consequences. It can interrupt storage activity, network access and dependent services. An operator who can see a frozen application is not automatically authorized to remove power from its server. The purchase discussion should include service ownership, an approved recovery sequence and a way to confirm that a device has returned.
Map the exact outlets and their dependencies
Build an outlet schedule before comparing interfaces. Record each outlet number, connected asset, power-supply identifier, owner and permitted recovery action. For dual-supply equipment, list both cords and feeds. If a server survives removal of one feed, switching a single outlet may not reboot it. If both cords land in the same controlled group, one command may have a wider effect than intended.
Also map the devices that provide remote access. A router, management switch or console appliance can be part of the recovery path. Turning off the only switch that reaches the PDU may prevent a second command from arriving. Some products support timed cycle actions, but confirm their exact behavior in the manual instead of assuming two independent commands will work.
Labeling is part of the product’s operating value. A neat web interface cannot compensate for stale outlet names after equipment changes. Include an update step in every move or replacement procedure. For a frequently changing lab, maintaining that map may take more effort than the occasional physical visit it saves.
| Question | Monitored unit | Switched unit |
|---|---|---|
| Can we view rack load remotely? | Verify network measurements | Verify network measurements |
| Can we restart a specific device? | Do not assume power control | Verify individual outlet or group control |
| Can one command affect storage? | Usually a visibility workflow | Requires explicit authorization and mapping |
| Does it provide a second power source? | No, unless it has a separate transfer function | No, switching alone does not establish redundancy |
A remote office needs a recovery plan, not a reboot button
Imagine an illustrative office with a firewall, a switch and a small server. The nearest technician is several hours away. A switched outlet for a device that has an approved hard-restart procedure might reduce the need for a visit. The benefit depends on the PDU being reachable during the failure, an operator identifying the correct device and the device recovering after power returns.
For the server, start with its own management controller and operating-system procedures. A controlled shutdown or application recovery can be preferable to a power interruption. The PDU becomes a fallback when the usual methods cannot work, rather than the default response to every slow application. The guide for each asset should say which condition permits that fallback.
In a staffed data room, the same capability may be less valuable. Remote monitoring could satisfy capacity management while staff handle physical interventions. That is a reasonable choice if response expectations allow it. The right comparison includes travel time, staffing, change control and the risk of switching the wrong device, rather than a generic claim that remote reboot always pays for itself.
Do not confuse switching with measurement precision
A switched outlet is not automatically a metered outlet. Read the measurement rows separately from the control rows. An input total can show overall rack load while individual outlets are controlled, without giving a trusted consumption figure for each device. The reverse can also exist: detailed outlet metering with no ability to interrupt power. Match both to the actual task.
The Eaton PDUMH15NET2LX is a useful exact-model reference because the manufacturer identifies network control and individually controllable outlets. That supports a remote-control discussion, not a claim that every receptacle has billing-grade energy data. Consult the PDUMH15NET2LX data sheet and our 120V PDU comparison for the distinction.
Do not infer a unit’s entire behavior from a product family photograph. Similar enclosures can contain different outlet controls, network cards and load banks. Verify the complete suffix and review the current manual for that exact model. A listing that combines several variants under one title needs additional checking before it becomes a purchase recommendation.
Control permissions are part of the specification
Ask who needs read-only data and who needs switching privileges. A monitoring platform may need to read measurements without permission to shut down outlets. Review whether the proposed management interface supports the required separation and whether changes are logged. The goal is clear responsibility, especially when multiple support providers share the same closet.
Document behavior after an input power loss and restoration. Which outlets return automatically? Are there delays or groups? Is a saved setting retained? These are questions to answer from the manual and validate in an approved commissioning window. Do not discover the default after a real outage or assume a schedule imported from another model has identical meaning.
If an environmental or software rule can trigger power actions, treat it as an automation decision, not a convenient checkbox. A temperature alert might call for investigation, workload movement or facilities response. Cutting power may be inappropriate. Have the equipment owner approve any such rule and keep a path to recover the management system.
Specify the complete switched-power requirement
A useful request for quotation says which outlets require control, whether groups are acceptable, what alert and authentication systems must work, and how the PDU will remain reachable. It also retains ordinary electrical requirements: source voltage, input connector, rated load, outlet arrangement and mounting. Remote features do not relax those compatibility checks.
For a monitored purchase, state explicitly that remote control is unnecessary if that is the conclusion. This helps prevent a reseller from substituting a more elaborate model merely because it shares a family name. For a switched purchase, include the outlet map and recovery owner in the acceptance checklist.
Choose the controlled model when its documented functions remove a specific operational obstacle. Choose monitoring alone when the required result is visibility, trend data and alerts. A good buying decision leaves the team with a repeatable response process, not just a new interface that makes it easier to interrupt the wrong equipment.
